I knew a lot of these but for my reference and for your enjoyment I am listing them here as well:

1, 2, 3, & 4. Spring Onions, Leeks, Scallions, & Fennel

These are the ones I regrow the very most, I always have a mason jar of green onions regrowing above my kitchen sink. The technique is quite simple. Once you are done with them (any of the above four), simply place the root end in a jar of water & it will begin to regrow within just a few days. Just make sure to replace the water with fresh as need be.
15 Foods That Can Be Regrown from Scraps

5. Lemongrass

You can regrow lemongrass the same way you regrow the green onions. Simply place the root ends in a glass of water, refreshing the water as needed. You will want to wait to harvest your lemongrass until it is about 12 inches tall.

6. Ginger

Plant a small chunk off of your piece of ginger in potting soil with the newest buds facing up. Ginger enjoys non-direct sunlight in a warm moist environment. Before long, it will begin to regrow shoots and roots. Once the plant is established and you’re ready to harvest, pull up the whole plant, including the roots. Remove a piece of the ginger, and re-plant it to repeat the growing process.

Here is a good video on replanting ginger:

7. Potatoes

Pick a potato that has a lot of good formed eyes, and cut it into 2-3 inch pieces, taking care to be sure that each piece has at least 1-2 eyes on it. Leave the cut pieces to sit at room temperature for a day or two, which allows the cut areas to dry. Potato plants thrive on a high-nutrient environment, so it is best to flip compost into your soil before you plant. Plant your potato pieces about 8 inches deep with the eye facing up. Cover it with 4 inches of soil, leaving the other 4 inches empty. As your plant begins to grow and more roots appear, add more soil.

8. Sweet Potatoes

You will need sweet potatoes with good formed eyes, just as you would want with a regular potato. You can bury the entire potato or use pieces under a thin layer of topsoil in a moist place with plenty of sun. When the shoots begin to reach a height of four inches you will need to replant the sweet potatoes, allowing them about 12 inches between each another. It takes about 4-6 months to grow sweet potatoes this way.

9, 10, 11, & 12. Romaine Lettuce, Celery, Bok Choy, & Cabbage

These all are regrown by placing the roots in a dish of water. Cut the leaves or stalks off to about an inch above the roots. Place the root end in a dish of water. Make sure that the roots are inside of the water, but do not submerge the rest of the plant. Place in a sunny window & spray with water 1-2 times a week to keep the top of the plant moist.

13. Onions

Onions are one of the easiest vegetables to regrow from scraps. Just cut off the root end of your onion, leaving a 1’2 inch of onion on the roots. Place it in a sunny location in your garden and cover the top with soil. Make sure to keep the soil moist by watering when needed. As you use your home-grown regenerated onions, keep replanting the root ends you cut off, and you’ll never have to purchase onions at the store again.

14. Garlic

You can re-grow a plant from a single clove. Simply plant it with the root-end down. Sit the plant in a sunny window. Once established, cut back the shoots and the plant will put all it’s forces into producing a nice garlic bulb – full of flavor & capable of repelling sparkly vampires. You can repeat this process with a clove from the new bulb you have just grown.

15. Pineapple

To re-grow pineapples, you will need to remove the green leafy part at the top and take care that no fruit remains attached. Either hold the crown firmly by the leaves and twist the stalk out, or you can cut the top off the pineapple and remove the remaining fruit flesh with a knife. If you do not remove all the fruit parts, it will rot after planting and will likely kill your plant. Carefully slice small, horizontal sections from the bottom of the crown until you see root buds (the small circles on the flat base of the stalk). Remove the bottom few layers of leaves leaving about an inch worth of them at the bottom of the stalk. Plant your pineapple crown in a warm and well drained environment. Water your plant regularly at first. Once the plant is established, you can cut down to about once a week. You will see growth in the first few months but it will take about 2-3 years before you are able to harvest.

did you know that you don't need to refrigerate a freshly laid egg? You don't need to refrigerate eggs at all unless they have been washed. This is because a freshly laid egg has what you call a bloom/coating that protects it from bacteria. I've never been to Europe, but from what I hear it is not uncommon for people to keep eggs out on the counter instead of refrigerating them. Once the egg is washed, it will then have to be refrigerated because you have washed away that protective coating.
I've seen you screaming at your kids in public, I've seen you ignoring them at the playground, I've seen you unshowered and wearing last night's pajama pants at preschool drop-off. I've seen you begging your children, bribing them, threatening them. I've seen you shouting back and forth with your husband, with your mom, with the police officer at the crosswalk.

I've seen you running around with your kids, getting dirty and occasionally swearing audibly when you bang a knee. I've seen you sharing a milkshake with a manic 4-year-old. I've seen you wiping your kids' boogers with your bare palm, and then smearing them on the back of your jeans. I've seen you carry your toddler flopped over the crook of your arm while chasing a runaway ball.

I've also seen you gritting your teeth while your kid screamed at you for making him practice piano, or soccer, or basket weaving or whatever it was. I've seen you close your eyes and breathe slowly after finding a gallon of milk dumped into your trunk. I've seen you crying into the sink while you desperately scrub crayon off your best designer purse. I've seen you pacing in front of the house.

I've seen you at the hospital waiting room. I've seen you at the pharmacy counter. I've seen you looking tired and frightened.

I've seen a lot of you, actually.

I see you every single day.

I don't know if you planned to be a parent or not. If you always knew from your earliest years that you wanted to bring children into the world, to tend to them, or if motherhood was thrust upon you unexpectedly. I don't know if it meets your expectations, or if you spent your first days as a mom terrified that you would never feel what you imagined "motherly love" would feel like for your child. I don't know if you struggled with infertility, or with pregnancy loss, or with a traumatic birth. I don't know if you created your child with your body, or created your family by welcoming your child into it.

But I know a lot about you.

I know that you didn't get everything that you wanted. I know that you got a wealth of things you never knew you wanted until they were there in front of you. I know that you don't believe that you're doing your best, that you think you can do better. I know you are doing better than you think.

I know that when you look at your child, your children, you see yourself. And I know that you don't, that you see a stranger who can't understand why the small details of childhood that were so important to you are a bother to this small person who resembles you.

I know that you want to throw a lamp at your teenager's head sometimes. I know you want to toss your 3-year-old out the window once in a while.

I know that some nights, once it's finally quiet, you curl up in bed and cry. I know that sometimes, you don't, even though you wanted to.

I know that some days are so hard that all you want is for them to end, and then at bedtime your children hug you and kiss you and tell you how much they love you and want to be like you, and you wish the day could last forever.

But it never does. The day always ends, and the next day brings new challenges. Fevers, heartbreak, art projects, new friends, new pets, new fights. And every day you do what you need to do.

You take care of things, because that's your job. You go to work, or you fill up the crock pot, or you climb into the garden, or strap the baby to your back and pull out the vacuum cleaner.

You drop everything you're doing to moderate an argument over whose turn it is to use a specifically colored marker, or to kiss a boo-boo, or to have a conversation about what kind of lipstick Pinocchio's Mommy wears.

I know that you have tickle fights in blanket forts, and that you have the words to at least eight different picture books memorized. I've heard that you dance like a wild woman when it's just you and them. That you have no shame about farting or belching in their presence, that you make up goofy songs about peas and potatoes and cheese.

I know that an hour past bedtime, you drop what you're doing and trim the fingernail that your 3-year-old insists is keeping her up. I know that you stop cleaning dishes because your kids insist you need to join their tea party. I know you fed your kids PB&J for four days straight when you had the flu. I know that you eat leftover crusts over the sink while your kids watch "Sponge Bob."

I know you didn't expect most of this. I know you didn't anticipate loving somebody so intensely, or loathing your post-baby body so much, or being so tired or being the mom you've turned out to be.

You thought you had it figured out. Or you were blind and terrified. You hired the perfect nanny. Or you quit your job and learned to assemble flat-packed baby furniture. You get confused by the conflict of feeling like nothing has changed since you were free and unfettered by children, and looking back on the choices you made as though an impostor was wearing your skin.

You're not a perfect mom. No matter how you try, no matter what you do. You will never be a perfect mom.

And maybe that haunts you. Or maybe you've made peace with it. Or maybe it was never a problem to begin with.

No matter how much you do, there is always more. No matter how little you do, when the day is over, your children are still loved. They still smile at you, believing you have magical powers to fix almost anything. No matter what happened at work, or at school, or in playgroup, you have still done everything in your power to ensure that the next morning will dawn and your children will be as happy, healthy, and wise as could possibly be hoped.

There's an old Yiddish saying: "There is one perfect child in the world, and every mother has it."

Unfortunately, there are no perfect parents. Your kids will grow up determined to be different than you. They will grow up certain that they won't make their kids take piano lessons, or they'll be more lenient, or more strict, or have more kids, or have fewer, or have none at all.

No matter how far from perfect you are, you are better than you think.

Someday your kids will be running around like crazy people at synagogue and concuss themselves on a hand rail, and somebody will still walk up to you and tell you what a beautiful family you have. You'll be at the park and your kids will be covered in mud and jam up to the elbows, smearing your car with sugary cement, and a pregnant lady will stop and smile at you wistfully.

No matter how many doubts you might have, you never need doubt this one thing: You are not perfect.

And that's good. Because really, neither is your child. And that means nobody can care for them the way you can, with the wealth of your understanding and your experience. Nobody knows what your child's squall means, or what their jokes mean, or why they are crying better than you do.

And since no mother is perfect, chances are you are caught in a two billion way tie for
Best Mom in the World.

Congratulations, Best Mom in the World. You're not perfect.
You are as good as anybody can get.

When life gives you something rather it hands it to you gracefully or throws it at you with full force you are measured by how you rise or fall to the occasion. ~ Witchen
Take parenthood for example, you might not have planned to become a parent and all of a sudden you are responsible for another's life. Will you rise to the occasion and put aside your own selfishness or will you become like so many and grumble your way through the little child's life? Although this incident little child did nothing and yet was created from your very soul will you hold in your heart little more then contemp for them?
A parent should strive to fill their tiny children's hearts with love and trust and happiness everyday.

"Children shouldn't have to sacrifice for you to have the life you want You make sacrifices so that your children can have the life they deserve. "
When I was young and just starting out on my own it took a bit of trial and error to figure out what worked for me grocery shopping, and as my family grew so did my grocery bill so my way of shopping adapted with the change in amount spent.
I have come to notice that there seems to be some struggle even in more mature people with how to do grocery shopping.
I don't work outside the home I take care of the house and kids and run the local elementary schools PTA. none of this generates a income so we only get payed on my husbands pay schedule, this happens every two weeks. If we got payed once a month or every week my shopping and budgeting might be different.
Because we get payed every two weeks this is also how I do my grocery shopping.
First I set down and make a list of dinners for two weeks.I add anything I don't have in the house for those meals to the list. Then I look at my fridge, cupboards, and pantry and make a list of things I might need for breakfasts, my kids lunches and the occasional lunch we are home as a family for. I don't make a actual list of breakfasts and lunches but you could.
There are some things I buy in bulk like flour that I store in a five gallon bucket and fill the canister on my counter as needed.
I get on coupon websites and only look for coupons to the things on my list. Its easy to get carried away with all the coupons and end up buying things you don't need just because you got a good price.
Learn about extreme couponing and apply where it works for you. I do not extreme coupon for everything I buy because a lot of the things that you can do this for are things we don't eat. If your really really hurting to save some money you might have to sacrifice some of the healthy eating for buying cheap but keep in mind that cheap food almost never has health benefits.
Unprocessed raw food is the best for you and for this reason the biggest chunk of my grocery bill is spent on produce. I don't make a list of produce I just go to the store and get whats in season and available. I live in a pretty rural area and so what is at the store is always anyone's guess. However there are a few things that are always kept on hand and in my house those are things like onions, carrots, celery, potatoes and apples. then we pick and choose from what we can get organic, and what is in season. My bakery is right by the produce in my store and they make fresh bread daily, there are fewer additives in there bread then other brands so that's what I buy plus its almost half the price. There might be a few canned items that I buy and some dried goods but then its off to the frozen section where I get most the veggies that are served as side dishes like frozen green beans or peas. I never buy canned veggies. It is easier to find Organic veggies and fruit in the frozen section so this is where I get all our berries for shakes and desserts. Then I go to the dairy section where I get lots of cheese and yogurt and pick up some almond milk. My husband usually hunts for our meat once a year (don't get all crazed on me telling me about killing animals and such) So I don't really have to buy meat from the market if I do I go with local meat over the name brand stuff shipped from who knows where.
For my family of four (really right now its 4 1/2) It costs me under three hundred sometimes depending on what is still in my house only two hundred for the two weeks this means I spend a average of five hundred a month on groceries. the national average is nine hundred a month for a family of four and I buy what I can organic and spend a lot on fresh produce. If you keep your eyes open you can sometimes find coupons for produce as well. The reason i save so much is the amount of times I walk into the market. the more you walk in the higher chance you have that you will buy something you don't need. I am sure you have heard it before don't go shopping hungry, and stick to your list.
Try to balance nutrition with price if those organic onions are three times the price of the other ones then don't get the organic ones. (you don't need to buy onions organic anyways)
Try to cook as many of your own meals as possible from the most basic ingredients that you can. will you really save a lot of time adding that frozen bag of mixed veggies vs chopping them yourself? Maybe set aside a sunday afternoon to prep veggies if you need to. It probably takes me two minutes to chop all the vegetables for dinner. So the extra spent on the bag of mixed vegetables does not save me time or money I could buy five times the amount of vegetables from the produce section for the price of that frozen baggy. and that means five times the vegetable I will serve my family.
It might take six months to get a good foundation for what you like to buy and saving money but it can be done.

I've been all over the internet these last few weeks and two things that have really stuck out to me are: women complaining about how much they weigh after having a child. and/or mom's complaining that their children are picky eaters.
So here is my first question to these women:
Did you or are you breastfeeding?
Most often the answer I get is NO. Because it has become taboo in our culture to breastfeed our children or its gross or too much hassle.
The second question is much more obvious:
What's your diet like?
The answer I normally get is horrible.
If you eat your veggies your weight will be lower, the food you eat changes the flavor of your breast milk making your child accustomed to the flavor of those veggies. Breastfeeding does burn calories but thats not a excuse to eat whatever you want or to indulge in more calories.
Often we hear that because pregnancy and breastfeeding can burn calories we should eat 300-500 more calories while this is not only a very unhealthy attitude to have many don't know what 300 calories looks like.
If you want to eat more during pregnancy or breastfeeding EAT VEGETABLES!
Not only will this prepare your child from the womb to like veggies but when mom eats her veggies kids will eat them to.
My husband did not grow up having to eat vegetables as a result he still hates most veggies. Regardless of if he likes them or not I still serve vegetables. He will now eat quite a few vegetables.
but I started introducing vegetables late to him, my children however have had a large veriety of vegetables right from the start.
If you put a plate of green beans or even spinich down in front of my daughter and a plate of hotdogs and macaroni ( a common child staple all over the usa) my daughter will eat all of the vegetable and then if she feels she is still hungry she will eat the other food.
Looking on the web for some fun lunch box foods for my son I came across a article that had a few different suggestions for healthy lunch box food where things like hummus and guacamole made appearances in the food. the comments that this article received were all negative. Every single parent on there said "are you kidding me? hummus and guacamole these are kids lunches what kid do you know that will eat those?" Well instead of complaining about the article which was published on a very respectable parents web site perhaps these parents should look at there habits and why there children will not eat this food.
How often do you think that the kids of these parents have tried Hummus? How often do you think the parents themselves eat it?
The answer is quite simple Eat your vegetables and eat them in front of the kids. if its not too late breastfeed your children it will help you burn calories and triggers a hormone to help you loose the baby weight it also sets them up for a healthier life all around.
Stop eatting processed junk food. sure that broccoli does not taste that great when your taste buds are use to salted potato chips.
Try this for only thirty days do NOT eat any ANY processed or junk food. if you crave chocolate eat organic 70% cocoa. want sweetness in your tea try organic blue agave. eat fresh fruits and veggies cook your meals and after those thirty days try to eat something that you liked before. Now that your taste buds have adjusted regular candy bars taste like wax, soda taste like the can, and packaged food taste just plain horrible. You will wonder how you ever ate that stuff before. Not up for a whole make over, not even for 30 days ok switch just one thing either your ONCE a week candy bar for a organic 70% cocoa one. Or your "syrup" that you pour on your waffles or in your oatmeal for the real thing 100% pure maple syrup. After you have switched to only one of these try to go back and taste to other stuff eww.
Your children are not pre dispositioned to like candy and junk food they learned it from YOU.
So chances are if your children are picky eaters you're most likely also overweight. The only person who can change this is you.
Needless to say i felt great until morning sickness set in. Now that i am five months along all sickness had gone unless i forget to eat regularly. I started juicing again this last week and it has really helped me feel better i wish i could get up and exercise but i am suppose to stay off my feet as much as possible. I sure do wish i had juiced more in my early pregnancy but it was all i could do to function at all in those early days. Anyways the point being when you are not feeling great try detoxing and juicing it csn make s world of diffetence. I'm sorry that much of this seems to be wrote sloppy I'm on my phone so i will go back and edit it on my computer and fix it later.

It's my birthday!!!

Happy birthday to me!

Just spending time with my children is all the present one could want. Okay maybe a spotless house, a spotless well organized house. would be a nice gift but its pretty hard to buy one of those.
I see no need to go out and party, spend the night acting like a idiot, and spend the next day feeling like crap. I have long ago discovered that the best time one can have is with the ones you love.

This pregnancy is my third and most people i've talked to said that for some reason there third pregnancy had more sickness than others. For me personally the first two weeks were fine but the next eight I was in pretty bad shape as far as even being able to function in my daily life. With two children to care for on top of being sick things like housework and make up soon became memories. I am 16 Weeks In and only now have I felt well enough to do an overhaul of my kitchen and start to get things back on track. One of the things that I could not do for those weeks that I was sick was to swallow down pills, not even the smallest prenatal. I already knew that our bodies do not absorb the vitamins or minerals from pills very well but you are always told how important your prenatals are to the development of your child. Not taking them had me worried and so I looked into the nutrients in them and where else I might be able to get what I needed. Every brand of pill will differ slightly in the amount of each nutrient that is in the pill but since our bodies don't absorb most of it from the pill anyways i just tried to get close to the amount found in my once a day pills that I had on hand.
Getting all of the B-vitamins needed into my diet without pills soon proved to be the most difficult as these are mostly found in animal products, I am not a vegetarian by any means but I also am not a meat lover. And while I make a really yummy clam chowder my taste tolerance to seafood is really low. Good for me then that I learned that you don't actually have to take every vitamin every day and that to get the vitamin b-12 you need having clam chowder once a week actually was enough.
I was also surprised to find out that paprika and chili powder contained most of the vitamins and minerals in my prenatals the only problem was that you could never eat enough of the spice to get a good daily value but adding them to my other foods would help.
One Tablespoon of paprika for example will give you 5% of the daily value of Niacin also called B3. .So by adding this to something like potato salad I improved that dish to include more of the vitamins my baby needs.
Many foods contain more than one vitamin or mineral and these I try to get most every day like Eggs, Kale, Sunflower Seeds, Almonds, Spinach, and even Dark Chocolate.
The amount of seeds that you would need to eat each day to get all of your B Vitamins is ridiculous and so I took Sunflower seeds, Almonds, Pine Nuts, Peanuts, Pistachios, and Pumpkin seeds and ground them all together and made a butter that I spread on my toast in the morning or on a sandwich for a snack or lunch. As for other vitamins I make a smoothie in the morning from yogurt, berries and whey powder with almond milk and some kale juice that I juiced myself to start my day and get my body absorbing what it needs. I scramble about eight eggs in the morning for me and the family and add hot sauce on that also adding things like cheese, milk, green peppers, onions, whatever I feel like that day into the eggs gives them more of a boost.
I also juice fruits and veggies to get a good size glass at least every other day. into this i put things like two green apples two large carrots a yellow bell pepper about three cups of Kale, a cup of spinach a small tomato two celery stalks one half or one tiny clove of garlic and a cup of asparagus if i have it on hand, ,I also throw in herbs like parsley and thyme this will give me a little less than 16 ounces of juice from my particular juicer. this juice gives me lots of vitamin A and C along with the Folic acid my baby needs and a little zinc, calcium, vitamin E, and vitamin B.
So its more complicated to get everything this way but if you eat healthy you're probably already eating most of the vitamins and minerals you need. Plus this is more natural, your body absorbs what it needs easily from the foods and especially the juice. Also you get to control the sources for the vitamins and minerals this way.
add to this routine above a healthy dinner with a serving of meat or seafood and you get everything you need in a week this way without trying to choke down a pill that will in all reality probably not give you the things your body needs.
I am 16 Weeks pregnant with baby number three:)
As part of having a new baby I will be sharing about cloth diapering. I know this is not something that is everyone's cup of tea but it is the choice I am going to try for. I say try because I actually started out cloth diapering my first born however I really didn't know about all the modern options they have now and after about a month I gave up. More on that stuff latter but stay tuned to learn about that and lots more pregnant information and blogs coming up!

Phouka - Can appear in various animal forms and are considered to be dangerous. Pooka pronounced poo-ka is from the old Irish ‘Puca, which means ‘goblin’. There are many variations of the spelling Pooka some of which are Puca, Plica, Phuca,Pwwka, Puka or Pookha all of which are totally acceptable.

It is possible that the origin of the word Pooka may come from the Scandinavian word Pook or Puke meaning ‘nature sprit’.

In Ireland, the Pooka seems to be the most feared Faerie possibly because it appears only at night and enjoys creating havoc and mischief. We feel this is doing the Pooka an injustice because there are no recorded incidences of a Pooka actually causing a human any harm.

A Pooka is a shape-shifter and can take any form it chooses but usually it is seen in the form of a dog, rabbit, goat, goblin or even an old man but traditionally a Pooka is seen as a dark, sleek horse with a long wild flowing mane and luminescent golden eyes. An important thing to always remember about a Pooka is that they have the power of human speech and when inclined make great sport of those they talk to as they like to embellish the truth.
Where can you find a Pooka?

Pooka’s can be found in any rural location and every county in Ireland has its very own Pooka. They like open mountainous areas so that they can run free while in horse form.

Many small mountainous lakes and springs in Ireland are called ‘Pooka Pools’ or ‘Pollaphuca’, which means Pooka or Demon hole. Some of these are found at the sources of major Irish rivers such as the Liffey that runs through Dublin or the River Bann, which is the longest river in Northern Ireland that runs through Coleraine in County Derry.

Over the last thousand years Christians have changed the name of some of the Pooka Pools to St. Patrick’s Wells.
Pooka superstitions & customs

There are a lot of superstitions and customs that are still observed to-day in Ireland regarding the Pooka and these vary depending on which region you happen to find yourself in.

Although there seems to be a common ground when you talk about a Pooka some of the stories are alike and just differ on the minor details.

Would you accept a Lift?

When a Pooka is in horse form, which it seems to favour a lot, he tends to have fun by inviting a rider to jump on his back this seems to happen when the rider has had a little too much to drink and is making his weary way home from the pub and would gladly jump at the chance of a lift. Thus starts the wildest trip the rider will ever know for the Pooka loves to terrify the rider with its great prowess jumping over hedges and rocks and making death defying leaps. Come the grey dawn the rider is thrown off the Pookas back and left trembling but none the worse from the night’s events to find his own way home.

This is maybe where the Pookas reputation slips a bit as while on a wild night out like this they do tend to run through crop fields and knock down fences without a care.

Stop For a Chat

Another thing the Pooka love, as with all us Irish people, is to chat and will happily stop and ‘shoot the breeze’ with you, sometimes giving great advice and making exceptional prophecies.

In some rural areas you will see houses that will have a bench on the right side of the door and the gatepost on the right will be smooth whereas on the left there will be a rockery or some sort of uncomfortable mound this is because a good Pooka will always sit on the right and the more mischievous sprite will favour the left.

The Pooka tends to use the same opening gambit to introduce himself it will be something like, “You are new here I think. Many years ago I used to live in this house..”

One of his favourite topics is how the family lost its fortune or was swindled out of their money and lands.

The odd thing about a conversation with a Pooka is that you may have sat and chatted to him for over an hour but he will suddenly disappear without saying good-bye (a Pooka never says good-bye) and you will be left with the uncomfortable feeling of not knowing for sure if the past hour was real. The Pooka will never leave any sign that he was there.

The Pookas Share

Pookas are mainly associated with Samhain (31st Oct) and November 1st is considered Pookas Day. This coincides with the harvest and the traditional customs that when the harvest is being brought in the reaper must leave a few stalks behind this is called the Pookas share and must be left to appease the Pooka because we for one would not like to incur his wrath.
It is said that when we see the rain falling on a sunny day, which it does a lot in Ireland, the Pooka will definitely be out and about that night.
Also berries that have been killed by the frost overnight should never be eaten as it is the Pookas spit that is on them and that would render them poisonous.
Pooka in modern Popular Culture

The Pooka in all his shapes and forms has made it into many books and films one of the most famous is Harvey the six foot white rabbit from the play by Mary Chase immortalised in film by Jimmy Stewart. Or the infamous scene in Darby O’Gill and the Little People when the Pooka scares Darby into falling down the well and he first meets King Brian.

More modern films have Pookas appearing in animal form as well for example in the 2001 film Donnie Darko, a Pooka in rabbit form encourages Donnie to do malicious acts which have a positive and negative result on the people around him.

Merpeople are neutral but cooperate well with the elves and barter with them. They tend to be superficial and self centered and are often depicted with a mirror and a comb. They are generally unhappy about the pollution and destruction of their waters and they tend to hold humans responsible for this. Still, Mermaids in particular tend to be very fond of human males and often fall in love with them which unfortunately often ends with the human drowning.
Are sly and tricky and can disappear in the blink of an eye. They are particularly fond of, and active on, Saint Patrick's day, but any day is good for them. You may end up being the luckiest person alive if you ever manage to catch a Leprechaun but there again it could bring more than enough trouble for what its worth.

A Leprechaun is a smart, devious little thing and who’ll do anything to escape capture even if it means turning you into a frog. They are the exception in the Faerie realm as they are the only Faerie that has a trade other than cattle trading. They are shoe-makers.As part of Irish mythology and folklore the Leprechauns are part of our faerie folk, called by some as the “wee folk”. As a cousin of the clurichaun they are known to inhabited Ireland well before the arrival of the Celts.

Small enough for one to sit comfortable on your shoulder they are very smartly dressed in small suites with waist coats, hats and buckled shoes.

As mischievous and intelligent folk they are general harmless to the general population in Ireland, although they are known to play the odd trick on farmers and local population of villages and towns.

It is said that every Leprechaun has a pot of gold, hidden deep in the Irish countryside. To protect the leprechaun’s pot of gold the Irish fairies gave them magical powers to use if ever captured by a human or an animal. Such magic an Irish leprechaun would perform to escape capture would be to grant three wishes or to vanish into thin air!

Leprechauns are also very keen musicians who play tin whistles, the fiddle and even the Irish Harp and various other Irish traditional instruments. They are known to have wild music sessions at night which in Ireland are known as Ceili’s with hundreds of Irish leprechauns gathering to dance, sing and drink.

The leprechaun is fond of drinking Poteen, moonshine, but must not be mistaken by their Irish cousins the cluricauns who are drunken creatures who love to cause chaos around Ireland at night time, a headache for us humans.

William Butler Yeats once said,

because of their love of dancing they (the Fae) will constantly need shoes

He goes on to tell the story of a woman who had been spirited away by the Faeries and had been returned seven years later minus her toes. She had danced them off!!!

The famous 1959 movie Darby O’Gill and the little people show us a great example of who the Leprechauns are and how we vision them. We’ve found a great clip of this movie that you can watch below, click on the play button to start watching. If you get lucky and manage to catch a leprechaun you need to be smarter than him or else you will be easily tricked which can have damaging results, never take your eye off him or he will vanish.

A captured leprechaun will grant you three wishes or a gold coin to bribe his way to freedom but this is when things can go terrible wrong if the wrong decisions are made.

Many of an Irish man who thought he could out smart an Irish leprechaun had selected the three wishes and would either go insane trying to think of what to wish for or their wishes would back fire with something bad happening.

One common story was of Seamus in County Mayo who wished to be the richest man on a tropical Ireland but when his wish came true he suddenly realized that there were no shops or pubs on the island to spend his money or even people to talk with. Unfortunately Seamus became bored after a few hours on the Island and had to waste his third wish to return to Ireland. This could be how the phrase “luck of the Irish” originated from.

One of the biggest tips an Irish person can give anyone is to never listen to what the Irish leprechaun says, no matter what. The leprechauns are great mind players and will say anything into confusing you into making the wrong wishes, although he is smart he can be fooled.

Irish leprechauns are devious little creatures and will do anything to escape from man so they should never be trusted. Some say angry leprechauns are more common than a friendly one but this is very untrue as Irish leprechauns are very friendly but tend to dislike humans who always seem to chase them for wishes and pots of gold.

If you ever spot a leprechaun you may be better off to pass him by without taking notice, you can end up in more trouble than its worth if decide to chase them as the people of Ireland only know to well. Unfortunately with cities in Ireland expanding the poor wee leprechauns are being driven further underground away from man, taking their rainbows with them.
